The Morley Chamber Orchestra concert series 2023/24: Austro/German Romanticism from Mozart to Schoenberg

In 2023/24 the Morley Chamber Orchestra is scheduled to perform a series of four concerts, highlighting the magnificent music of Austro-German Romanticism.

At the opening concert of the series, Camilla Seale and pianist Michalis Angelakis will join the Morley Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Charles Peebles, to perform Mozart’s Aria ‘Chi mi scordi di te’ K505.

Biographies

Praised for her ‘unaffected simplicity’ and ‘velvety mezzo’ timbres (The Telegraph), mezzo-soprano, Camilla Seale, made her operatic debut at Buxton International Festival as Prince Charming in Viardot’s ‘’ before joining the Glyndebourne Festival Opera Chorus the following season. She trained at Morley Opera School before completing a Masters at RNCM, where she studied under Jane Irwin and Michael Harper. Recent concert highlights include Emily Howard’s ‘Threnos’ at the Wigmore Hall, Schumann’s ‘Liederkreis’ Op.39 at the Manchester Song Festival, and a French song tour with duo partner, Craig White. Camilla came to music at an early age, signing with the cross-over group, Angelis, under Sony BMG. Before training at RNCM, she read English at Girton College, Cambridge and then Social Inequality at LSE. She joins the National Opera Studio as a Young Artist for 2023-24.

Greek-born repetiteur, conductor and vocal coach Michalis Angelakis studied piano at the Conservatoire of Athens (Piano Diploma) and the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance (Postgraduate Diploma & Master of Music in Piano Performance) before training as repetiteur and conductor at the National Opera Studio and the Royal Academy of Music in London (Fellowship in Opera Conducting).

Michalis Angelakis is currently the Head of Opera and Manager for Vocal Studies at Morley College, London, where he coaches and conducts the students of the Morley Opera School since 2015. Under his leadership, the Morley Opera School has gained high reputation as a leading course for singers preparing for the singing profession. 

Michalis is also a member of the Tetrachord Piano Ensemble, a quartet of four pianists that specialists in music for eight hands on two pianos. The ensemble has performed in venues such as St. John Smith’s Square in London and the Megaron Concert Hall in Athens, and they have appeared on BBC Radio 3’s programme In Tune.

In the past, Michalis has collaborated with a number of opera companies across London including the Royal Opera House, Hampstead Garden Opera, British Youth Opera, Opera Up-Close, Pop-Up Opera and others. He also conducted the first ever opera production in his native island of Crete, bringing to the island a London-based cast of singers that performed Puccini’s Suor Angelica.

He was one of the guest speakers in the Royal Opera House Battle of Arias event in 2019, where he presented a lecture recital on Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore.
